Green Ribbon Beach

Green Ribbon Beach logo The Green Ribbon Beach is a symbol of environmental excellence, intended to acknowledge, promote and protect the environment along Lake Huron. The future of our lakeshore, with its natural values and vulnerable ecosystems, needs a community that is actively engaged in the caring for our beaches.

Green Ribbon will recognize those communities who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to care for and preserve that natural shoreline environment.

The aim of the Green Ribbon Award is:

‘To acknowledge those beaches which are prized for their high quality and where care is taken to preserve their natural, unspoiled environment, or where their natural values have been restored.’

Why Participate in the Green Ribbon Program?

  • It recognizes that a beach is of high environmental quality based on science based criteria

  • It symbolizes that residents have high community standards for care of the natural coastal environment

  • It tells potential home-buyers that the beach has a value and level of distinction acknowledged by specialists

  • It indicates that your beach community values a healthy coastal environment.

Three Levels of Distinction

  1. OUTSTANDING STEWARDSHIP
The highest level of distinction available. This recognition is reserved for beach organizations that have achieved high marks in all applicable criteria.

  2. SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT
If the beach is not eligible for Outstanding Stewardship because it falls short in one or more of the criteria, the Review Panel may elect to recognize specific aspects of a stewardship project with a Significant Achievement Award.

  3. SPECIAL RECOGNITION
If a beach does not qualify for the Outstanding Stewardship or Significant Achievement Distinction, but beach stewardship efforts do have an element that the judges feel merits recognition, then a Special Recognition may be awarded.

Selection

An independent “Green Ribbon Panel,” made up of recognized experts in the fields appropriate to the criteria, will review applications and conduct site visits. The participating agencies and organizations appoint professionals to serve as members of this independent Panel.
