On July 13, 2007, the Coastal Centre hosted a one-day conference in Midland, Ontario. The purpose of this conference was to provide relevant information to local residents, municipalities and agencies in the southern Georgian Bay area about beach stewardship and the need to work cooperatively to protect the qualityof beaches and dunes.

Delegates heard from experts how taking better care of beach and dune resources helps to improve the quality and quantity of beaches, promote a healthier ecosystem with its abundance and diversity of coastal species, and lower incidences of bacterial contamination. Participants were presented with examples of how grassroots community groups have taken measures to protect their coastline. About 120 delegates attended the conference.

The Coastal Centre continues with its public education program with its biennial "Is the Coast Clear?" conference on Friday, May 23, 2008 at the CAW Family Education Centre in Port Elgin.
