2003 Year In Review

Here's what we've been up to this year ...

Water Quality

  • Prepared a report for Environment Canada on historical nearshore water quality information for Lake Huron from Sarnia to Sauble Beach. Report centred on bacterial pollution, algal fouling and public complaints over the last 20 years.

Climate Change

  • Poster display in downtown Kincardine promoting the Centre’s educational resources kit on Climate Change.
  • Participate on national Advisory Committee and attended workshop in Vancouver for the Coastal Zone Node of the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations Research Network.
  • Teacher/student workshop at a London conference presenting the Centre’s new climate change resources kits.

Biodiversity

  • Community advisory and management planning for beach restoration in Port Elgin and Goderich.
  • Participate on the Terrestrial Service Team for the Maitland Watershed Partnership.
Coastal Processes

  • Completed a guidance manual for Beach and Dune conservation in Saugeen Shores and presented it to Town staff.
  • Implementing measures to control erosion on Port Elgin’s beach.
  • Provide water levels monitoring and advisories to agencies, municipalities and the community.
  • Provide technical advisory services on issues concerning coastal erosion and dune conservation.
  • Coordinated an ecological inventory and prepared a preliminary management plan for conserving the dunes at Sauble Beach for the Friends of Sauble Beach.
  • Coordinated a beach erosion control demonstration project in Goderich with the John Hindemarsh Environmental Trust Fund.
  • Presented papers at the Canadian Coastal Conference at Queen’s University.

Other work in 2003 ...
  • Focus group meetings involving 39 area organizations to assist in the development of a Strategic Plan for the Coastal Centre.
  • Plan input into the Official Plans of Huron-Kinloss, Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, Central Huron and South Huron.
  • Participate on Healthy Futures Technical Review Committee for Huron County.
  • Property Inspections for property owners, municipalities, agencies and prospective buyers of coastal property.
  • Workshop for area Planners on coastal land use planning.
  • Principle speaker at the Grey-Bruce Environmental Forum 2003 in Owen Sound.
  • Private land ecological inventory and stewardship report and implementation.
  • Presentations at Sauble Beach regarding dune conservation planning.
  • Review coastal engineering reports for CA clients.
  • Regular media interviews on Lake Huron issues.
