2002 Year In Review

Here's what we've been up to this year ...

Water Quality
  • Development of draft stewardship manual to promote clean harbours and marinas.
  • Assisted Environment Canada on a review of the state of water quality monitoring along Lake Huron.
  • Participate in the Pine River Watershed Improvement Network, a community based network of organizations working to improve the water quality of the watershed and the lakeshore in Huron-Kinloss.

Climate Change

  • Developed education resources on climate change and the Great Lakes for elementary schools.
  • Participate on Advisory Committee and attended national workshop for the Coastal Zone Node of the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations Research Network.
  • Teacher workshops presenting the Centre’s new climate change resources kits.
Coastal Processes
  • Developing a guidance manual for Beach and Dune conservation in Saugeen Shores.
  • Implementing measures to control erosion on Port Elgin’s beach.
  • Provide water levels monitoring and advisories to agencies, municipalities and the community.
  • Provide technical advisory services on issues concerning coastal erosion and dune conservation.
  • Supervise dune field studies with local elementary students.
  • Conducted hazard setback evaluations in Central Huron

Biodiversity

  • Community advisory and management planning for beach restoration south of Port Elgin.
  • Participate on the Terrestrial Service Team for the Maitland Watershed Partnership.
  • Requested for input to the State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference concerning Lake Huron’s biodiversity.

  • Initiation of Strategic Planning for the Coastal Centre.
  • Plan input into Huron-Kinloss Official Plan.
  • Participate on Healthy Futures Project Evaluation Committee for Huron County.
  • Pre-purchase Property Inspections for prospective buyers of coastal property.
  • Climate Change presentation to high school student forum in London, Ontario.
  • Presentation at Coastal Zone Canada conference.
  • TVOntario interview on water quality along Lake Huron.
  • Shoreline Technical Advisory Service to property owners, municipalities and agencies.
  • Private land ecological inventory and stewardship report.
  • Dune re-construction project for private landowner.
  • Proposal to Friends of Sauble Beach for dune conservation planning.
