2001 Year in Review

Here's what we've been up to this year ...

Water Quality

  • Prepared background paper on the state of Lake Huron’s water quality entitled “Working Toward Clarity”.
  • Organized a Water Quality Summit conference held in Goderich.
  • Prepared proceedings of the Water Quality Summit.
  • Participated in the Pine River Watershed Improvement Network, a community based network of organizations working to improve the water quality of the watershed and the lakeshore in Huron-Kinloss.

Climate Change

  • Developing education resource curriculum on climate change and the Great Lakes for elementary schools.
  • Invited to participate on Steering Committee and attend national workshop on Climate Change and Canada’s coasts.
  • Hosted a Symposium on the implications of Climate Change on Lake Huron’s coastal communities.
Coastal Processes

  • Developing a guidance manual for Beach and Dune conservation in Saugeen Shores.
  • Implementing measures to control erosion on Port Elgin’s beach.
  • Provide water levels monitoring and advisories to agencies, municipalities and the community.
  • Provide technical advisory services on issues concerning coastal erosion and dune conservation.
  • Supervise dune field studies with local elementary students.
  • Conducted hazard setback evaluations in Ashfield - Colborne-West Wawanosh.

Biodiversity

  • Community advisory and management planning for beach restoration south of Port Elgin.
  • Participated on the Terrestrial Service Team for the Maitland Watershed Partnership.

  • Invited as a key stakeholder to review Bruce Energy’s EIA for the Bruce “A” site.
  • Presentation to Friends of Sauble Beach.
  • Presentation to Ontario Professional Planning Institute southwest region.
  • Presentation to Port Elgin’s Probus Club.
  • Plan input into Huron-Kinloss Official Plan.
  • Participate on Healthy Futures Project Evaluation Committee for Huron County.
  • Presentation to Point Clark Beach Association.
  • Conducted Natural History Tours to foster adult education about coastal ecosystems.
  • Invited to speak at bi-national conference in Montreal on Community Outreach and Coastal Conservation.
  • Presentation to Friends of Pinery Park.
