The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is the only grassroots organization focused on protecting Lake Huron’s coastal environment. Water quality, coastal processes, climate change and biodiversity are the Coastal Centre’s priorities, and its actions are directed toward advocating wise stewardship by every segment of the coastal community.

For a full decade, the Coastal Centre has been working to restore and protect Lake Huron’s coastal environment, believing that the sustainability of the region’s coastal communities relies on a healthy coastal ecosystem.

Among the Coastal Centre’s achievements and ongoing activities:

  • Plans and supervises beach restoration projects with community partners
  • Participates in partnerships, advisory councils, steering committees, professional associations
  • Collaborates on projects with First Nations and community groups
  • Advises cottagers, municipalities and conservation authorities on coastal issues
  • Conducts research on local coastal issues with university partners
  • Publishes technical reports and management guides
  • Disseminates coastal information and findings through local media, workshops and conferences
  • Provides public education through factsheets and beach signage
  • Creates educational resources for elementary schools
  • Developed and implemented ‘Coastal Camp for Kids’ summer day camp
  • Initiated ‘Coast Watchers’, a volunteer shoreline monitoring program
  • Established a cottagers’ network to track occurrences of fish and bird mortality

The Coastal Centre is committed to action, particularly in the areas of education, stewardship outreach, research & partnerships, and corporate planning. Advisory services to shoreline landowner groups, conservation authorities and municipalities are also available. For details, contact:
